Brake pads on any vehicle tend to wear out over time. As a result, they must be replaced when they wear out. You may change the brake pads on your E46 BMW 3 Series by following the instructions outlined below.
Step 1: Take the tire off.
First and foremost, use a spanner to release the wheel nuts. Then, using a powerful car jack, elevate the vehicle from one side so that the tire does not make touch with the ground. After that, remove the nuts and detach the wheel from the hub.
Step 2: Take out the disc calipers.
Remove the clip from the caliper with a screwdriver. The sliding bolts can then be accessed by removing the dust caps on the back of the calipers. To remove the pair of sliding bolts and disconnect it from the assembly, use a 7mm Allen key. The caliper can then be removed from the brake disc, allowing you to access the brake pads.
Step 3: Change the brake pads.
After you’ve removed the worn-out brake pads, you can remove the brake fluid bottle’s cap. The braking fluid will return to the fluid reservoir when you push the piston. You must now make room for the new brake pads.
Greasing the sides of the piston will make it easier to slide. Now, apply lubricant to the edges and back of the brake pads so that they slide in easily. Tap the caliper onto the disc with a hammer to secure it. At this point, you should double-check that the brake pads and calipers are properly positioned.
You can now lubricate the caliper sliding bolts before screwing them into the thread and socket. Finally, reinstall the dust cover and use a screwdriver to clip on the caliper’s face.
Step 4: Replace the wheels.
You can now slide the wheel back onto the hub of the wheel with a wheel spanner. Make sure to stick to the star configuration. After that, lower the jack to get the car back on the ground. Finally, remember to tighten each nut individually.
Finally, repeat the same with the second wheel.
Step 5: Inspect the brake fluid level.
After you’ve replaced both pads, check the brake fluid to ensure it’s at the maximum level. If there is an excess of fluid, a syringe should be used to extract it.
